AKA:
Unique Selling Point

What does it mean:

It’s a selling point that differentiates you in the market. Think about it of ‘this is what I have that my competitors don’t’. 

Use it in a sentence:

To colleagues:

“The USP of our landing pages really isn’t working. Let’s A/B test some new ones”

To investors:

“Our USP that everything we do is stored on the blockchain.”


At a party:

“Well one USP of this product is I only hate half the people here, not the entire lot”

Urchin Tracking Module (UTM)

AKA:
Tracking Link, Universal Tracking, Click Identifier (CI) 

What does it mean:

Urchin was the analytics software that was eventually bought by Google and turned into Google Analytics. The UTM has since become an open standard for link tracking and campaign attribution. It works with most almost any analytics software package. 

The Formula:

https://yoursite.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=newsales

Source = Where did the traffic come from? Google, Facebook, blog, partner etc. 

Medium = What type of traffic is it? CPC (paid), email, or something else?

Campaign = Your custom campaign name which can be anything. 

Use it in a sentence:

To colleagues:

“I added UTM codes to all of our partner blog posts so now we’ll know which posts drive the most sales.”

To investors:

“Here’s a list of our top acquisition channels by source using our UTM tracking.”


At a party:

“I noticed today in a UTM link that a dating app put me in a campaign called ‘DesperateUsers’. I would be mad but honestly, they’re not wrong.”

Word of Mouth (WOM)

AKA:
Word of Mouth Marketing (WOMM), Word of Mouth Advertising 

What does it mean:

When users evangelize your product for you, sometimes with your encouragement and help to do so. 

Use it in a sentence:

To colleagues:

“We should do a marketing stunt to generate some WOM marketing.”

To investors:

“We use a refer-a-friend sharing platform to improve WOM.”


At a party:

“Hey did you hear about that great book of marketing acronyms called Marketing WTF? You should pick up a copy!”
